Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI)

Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI) was formed in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1985 as a private non-profit to accompany the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park.  MBI now manages three bioscience incubators in Worcester.

MBI Incubator at Barber Avenue
The Barber Avenue location provides space accommodations of all sizes to life science companies.  The incubator currently has a number of client tenants.
 
MBI Incubator at Biotech Three
Located in the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park this incubator provides space to life science companies close to the University of Massachusetts Medical School as well as the Massachusetts Stem Cell Bank and International Stem Cell Registry which were recently established with the support of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.

MBI Incubator at Gateway Park 
The Gateway Park incubator is associated with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).  The incubator is ideally positioned to spur the commercialization of WPI technology and allow incubated companies to expand into Gateway Park.

The Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park is cited by BioSpace.com as providing "nearly a million square feet of space." and includes a close proximity to local amenities.  Gateway park is a recent redevelopment project headed by the Worcester Business Development Corporation.

Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC)

The Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) is a bioprocessing facility located in the University of Minnesota BioTechnology Institute (BTI).  According to the BRC website www.bti.umn.edu/brc, the Center maintains protein expression and fermentation equipment and services available to University affiliates and regional Industry.

 

In addition to the walk-in services that BRC provides, there is also a training program where students learn the skills needed for a competitive workforce.  BRC is a member of Biodale (www.cbs.umn.edu/biodale), the University of Minnesota consortium of state-of-the-art equipment facilities that includes: the Biotechnology Resource Center, the Imaging Center, the Center for Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics, the BioMedical Genomics Center, the High Throughput Screening and Analysis Facility and the Computational Biology Centers. 

Association for Entrepreneurial Science (AES)

The Association for Entrepreneurial Science (AES) is located within Rockville, Maryland's Biomedical Research Institute (BRI).  BRI's website www.afbr-bri.com says that "AES brings together all the accompanying business skills required for profit making entrepreneurs to bring scientific products and services to the marketplace."  
 
 
AES opened in 1985 and has assisted numerous companies in their development, the incubator has AAALAC certified facilities and the resources to provide professional services in the areas of legal assistance, financial support and accounting, as well as purchasing and secretarial services.  A February 2005 article in The Daily Record (Baltimore) says cost of incubator space is "below market rates" and facilities include "wet lab space, autoclaves, low-temp repository, biohazard and chemical fume hoods, controlled substance handling and storage, environmental rooms and clean-room facilities."  
 
 
In addition, www.greaterwashington.org's incubator directory states that AES provides space ranging in size from 200 to 3,000 square feet, the incubator directory also says that AES provides professional advice to businesses "ranging from preparation of business plans and implementation of employee benefits, to real estate planning for when they relocate when leaving AES."  Choosemaryland.org and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development identifies the convenience of the incubator's location is its proximity to "the main campus of the National Institutes of Health, the Health & Human Services Parklawn Building and the Twinbrook Metro Station."

Research Triangle Park

Research Triangle Park

North Carolina's Research Triangle Park was originally developed in the 1950's, since then with technological and industrial innovation the park has grown to 7,000 acres.  The Research Triangle Park Foundation is maximizing the use of park space by redeveloping existing structures while preserving the natural environment and constructing additional amenities, and residential communities.  

Located close to many centers of higher learning, including Duke University, the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University, Research Triangle Park is home to a number of life science business incubators.  The Park's website www.rtp.org has links to the incubators located within the Park including Park Research Center, First Flight Venture Center, BD BioVenture Center, Alexandria Innovation Center and the Hamner Accelerator Facility.

University of Nebraska Technology Park

The University of Nebraska Technology Park in Lincoln, Nebraska promotes the development of new emerging technology companies through business incubation, entrepreneurial networks and collaboration with the University of Nebraska.  The Tech Park's website www.nutechpark.com says that since the Park was founded in 1998 it has since become the home to 19 companies and 1,400 employees.  The Tech Park includes the Technology Development Center (TDC) a business incubator that supports and guides small business development; One Technology Place (OTP), an accelerator facility that promotes the growth of medium sized and incubator graduate companies; and the Nebraska Center for Excellence in Electronics (NCEE) that houses a state-of-the-art electronics testing and training facility.

Dartmouth Regional Technology Center (DRTC)

The Dartmouth Regional Technology Center (DRTC) is a business incubator associated with Dartmouth College's Entrepreneurial Network (DEN) in Lebanon, New Hampshire's Centerra Resource Park.  DRTC was established in 2006 and has maintained full occupancy since 2007.  DRTC provides wet laboratories, light manufacturing facilities and office space in addition to their business education resources and funding network.  The 32,500 square foot DRTC building is closely associated with Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business and the Grafton County Economic Development Council, granting tenants a reliable network of support and guidance.
