San Jose BioCenter

The San Jose BioCenter has recently been awarded two prestigious, awards for incubation. The National Business Incubation Association's, Randall M. Whaley
Incubator of the Year Award, and the Dinah Adkins Incubator of the Year Award, in the category of Technology with a cash prize of $2,000.  The BioCenter is located
in Edenvale Technology Park in San Jose, California.  The 40,000 square foot BioCenter provides business and facility services to solvent, compelling, technology companies with identifiable IP assets in the fields of the life sciences, nanotech or cleantech.  The BioCenter is a partnership between the City of San Jose, San Jose State University Research Foundation and Prescience International.  Since the BioCenter's inception in 2004, incubated companies have raised $800 million in capital and injected more than 600 high technology jobs into the local economy.

I got into touch with Aurelie Gaudin at the BioCenter and looked at the San Jose BioCenter website www.sjbiocenter.com both are a wealth of information detailing the BioCenter’s ability to provide comprehensive direction and support to both resident and affiliate companies.  Resident companies acquire monthly leases to office space, wet labs and CORE Laboratories that include: a chem lab with NMR, LC/MS and HPLC; a bio lab with a flow cytometer, a microplate reader, a Leica fluorescence microscope, luminometer, gel doc and freeze dryer; as well as cell, virus and bacteria tissue culture rooms.  Shared equipment includes a thermocycler, centrifuges, -80 freezer, balances, pH meter, -3 fridge, liquid nitrogen, dry ice, an ice machine, a hot oven, a glass washer and an autoclave.

Incubated companies receive individual introductions to mentors and advisors from within the industry and unique opportunities to connect with potential partners and colleagues through special events and regular seminars which are critical to the Biocenter’s success.  Companies engaged with the BioCenter gain access to media exposure, and attention, in addition to the developmental business services and programs.  The San Jose BioCenter is able to manage operations both within the lab and inside the office, offering laboratory support services such as management of hazardous materials as well as hazardous materials management training.  The BioCenter is also able to manage office services including mail distribution, reception of visitors and IT support.  Clients have access to pro bono legal advice and leads from third party vendors. The San Jose BioCenter assists the commercialization of technology with long-term market potential.
