Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse (PLSG)

The Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse (PLSG) formed in 2002 through a partnership between the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, local government and private investment to spur the economic development of the region and to strengthen Pittsburgh's life sciences industry.  Today PLSG provides funding and business development resources for companies that are just starting, all the way up to companies reaching full maturity.

 
PLSG partners and incorporates outside expertise with a focused determination to leverage and invest resources into promising life sciences companies.  To do this the Greenhouse has developed a number of programs to move both young and established businesses into the realm of sustainable commercialization.  
 

PLSG operates both business development and capital investment programs that incorporate partnering with high potential life sciences companies in order to provide superior access to funding, incubation and direction of business strategies and planning.

PLSG has solid resources with local venture capitals and investment funds for both seed and growing companies. They are located within the Greater Oakdale Keystone Innovation Zone and  operate 22K square feet of incubator space in Pittsburgh spread across two sites that provide both office and wet laboratory facilities.  PLSG has a entrepreneur programs including the Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) to assists affiliated companies with identification and acquisition of experienced management.  Additionally, the Greenhouse operates a workforce development program that includes a training and a mobile lab for encouraging the interest of students in the life sciences.  
 
The Pennsylvania Life Sciences Greenhouse Initiative was signed into legislation in 2001 with a one time investment of $100 million from Pennsylvania's Tobacco Settlement.  In addition to the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse the initiative includes the Life Sciences Greenhouse of Central PA, and BioAdvance, the Biotechnology Greenhouse of Southeastern PA.
