(Tucson, Arizona) As part of the University of Arizona’s transformational efforts, the Office of Economic Development has been reorganized and renamed as the Office of University Research Parks (OURP).
OURP will continue to play a significant role in economic development, but with a focused approach on utilizing research parks and business incubators as technology development and commercialization tools.
OURP accomplishes this by creating environments that support and promote research, education, technology innovation and commercialization, and high technology business development and attraction.
OURP oversees the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park (Tech Park), Arizona Center for Innovation (AzCI), and the Arizona Bioscience Park (Bio Park). OURP is led by Bruce A. Wright, Associate Vice President for University Research Parks, who reports to Dr. Leslie Tolbert, Vice President for Research, Graduate Studies, and Economic Development. The OURP leadership team includes Ken Marcus, director of the Tech Park, Marie Wesselhoft, director of AzCI, and Molly Gilbert, project manager for the Bio Park, and John Grabo, director of Business Development.
For fifteen years, the Tech Park on Rita Road has served as an economic development tool by advancing the University of Arizona’s research mission and its efforts at technology development and technology commercialization. The Tech Park contributes nearly $2.5 billion annually to Pima County’s economy and is one of the region’s largest employment centers hosting 40 companies and employing more than 7,000 people.
AzCI, located at the Tech Park, has developed an incubation model that ensures start-up companies receive practical, hands-on assistance early in the innovation process, beginning in the research phase, and continuing through product development to commercialization. This structured approach helps companies to bridge the many gaps between discovery and commercialization, and increases the likelihood of success for a start-up company.
The Bio Park is located on fifty-four acres of land at the corner of 36th Street and Kino Parkway. The Bio Park is being designed to promote the development of the biotech industry in southern Arizona. Recently, the University of Arizona received a $4.7 million grant from the US Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA) to construct infrastructure improvements at the Bio Park. This grant will fund on-site infrastructure improvements, including: roads, water systems, dry utilities and perimeter landscaping.
