The Rochester BioVenture Center became the first incubator in New York’s Finger Lakes region able to support life sciences companies with both wet labs and business services. The biotech incubator is operated by High Tech Rochester to further the organization's mission of economic development in the region.
The Rochester BioVenture Center is located in Henrietta, New York in the University of Rochester Medical Center. The 40K square foot building was transformed from the former Wyeth laboratory into the current business incubator in 2007. Lab and office space is available in sizes ranging from 200 to 1,000 square feet for early stage and mid-sized biotech companies so that they may develop within a community of similar enterprises and remain within the area. The incubator provides access to funding, business services and a number of regular events through High Tech Rochester in affiliation with network partners. The incubator cooperates with many different organizations to facilitate the goal of transforming research into economic development.1
The business services offered by the incubator’s affiliates allow early stage entrepreneurs to ease through the difficult steps of creating a business, and work to build a system of advancement and job creation. In addition to individual lab space, the incubator also offers shared facilities and services to support companies and their accumulation of staff and assets. Although the BioVenture Center is in URMC, it is open to any eligible company that needs access to the facility and services regardless of institutional affiliation.
High Tech Rochester focuses on three major aspects of business support and economic development:
- Creation, High Tech Rochester will partner with entrepreneurs to develop business plans and Intellectual Property strategies during a company’s creation phase.
- Incubation, HTR and service providers will work with an incubated company to locate staff and funding after the company has formed, and provides a location for the company’s business to take place.
- Acceleration, HTR will identify manufacturing partners and marketing strategies to successfully grow a business.
HTR also has a Phase 0 funding program for eligible companies to support early development of research in preparation of Phase I SBIR or STTR proposals.
High Tech Rochester is a non-profit economic development agency that partners with companies to position executive management and mentorship that complements the specific engagement. The Entrepreneur-In-Residence program places top-talent professionals where they can direct the growth and course of a business while developing a relationship with core personnel.2
High Tech Rochester has a number of other programs in addition to the Rochester BioVenture Center geared towards building the local economy. The Lennox Technology Enterprise Center and the Manufacturing Extension Program are both designed to assist local companies with bringing new products and ideas to the marketplace.

The Lennox TEC is a 50K square foot technology incubator with dry labs and offices for businesses in the area that are not in need of wet labs space. The MEP is a division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership program which brings specialists and manufacturers together in order to aid the design and development of innovative products. With HTR’s array of services and contacts, partners are enabled to generate high quality enterprises within a network of support and cooperation.3, 4
The University of Rochester partnered with HTR early on in the Agency’s development to mobilize the commercialization of some of the University’s most innovative technology. The University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Hospital contribute to the strength of the UR Clinical and Translational Science Institute, where faculty researchers, private industry, as well as BioVenture Clients may conduct clinical trials in collaboration with faculty at the Clinical Research Center. The goal of many of the regions stakeholders is to activate the many discoveries made in local institutions in order to build the economy, create jobs, and attract investments while also making the immediate level of care available better through innovation in preventative treatments, diagnostic procedures and therapeutics.5

HTR has an invested relationship with their local alliances to bring innovation and prosperity to the Finger Lakes and the State of New York. MedTech is a regional trade association which bridges together members of the educational, economic development, and industry communities to collaborate on developing new services and technologies for the global medical marketplace. This community is key to keeping the best and brightest minds in place while supporting their endeavors so that they may create jobs and foster the healthy economy that is attractive to future investors, entrepreneurs and students.6
High Tech Rochester also has an affiliate program that allows client companies not residing at the Rochester BioVenture Center to take advantage of the many events and services available at the incubator. Affiliate companies also have access to HTR’s funding programs and service providers.
The Rochester BioVenture Center and High Tech Rochester are creating a zone of appreciation in the Finger Lakes that supports and directs the economy in cooperation with local universities. New York is taking a significant investment in this and other regions with the belief that it can gain from the locally grown wealth of knowledge and talent. The community is very important to keeping businesses local so they will grow and remain in the area with the network created during their period of incubation.
