Bread Board's NextFab Studio opened January 22, allowing students, adults, researchers and companies to fabricate and prototype novel designs in 3D. NextFab and Bread Board's Esther Klein Gallery which had an opening for the Brower Jet Propulsion Laboratory in conjunction with the open house, brought the public into the Science Center to share in the excitement and possibility that is always present.
The 3,600 square foot production space much like the gallery across the street meets a number of needs. It provides access to the materials that will generate both conceptual and physical innovation, so that the life cycle of information and commerce may perpetuate.
Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania held their Starving Entrepreneur Annual Open House this past Wednesday. In attendance were portfolio companies, network partners and executives at Ben Franklin’s Navy Yard headquarters in the Building 100 Innovation Center.

The Nanotechnology Institute (NTI) held the From Discovery to Commercialization Conference for nanotechnology at the Chemical Heritage Institute in Philadelphia on October 15 and 16. The event illuminated recent successes in the local community and initiatives that are accelerating the process of transferring discoveries from the labs of local researchers to the shelves of global consumers. The advances are happening in the fields of materials, energy, and biomedicine, and when managed correctly it is possible to choose the appropriate direction for sustainable technology to commercialization and innovation.
The Philadelphia Area New Media Association (PANMA) held an event at the University City Science Center on September 24, 2009 entitled: 'You've Started a Business: Now What?' The topic being pointers and tips for early stage companies to follow in the realm of time management and workflow optimization, as well as protecting intellectual property.

There was a Networking Breakfast this morning at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that was a follow up to the previous inauguration of the new ERAI offices and the Conference on the Green Industry in France at the University City Science Center. Members of both the Philadelphia business community and the French delegation from Rhone-Alpes shared experiences from their formal partnership that began in 2005.
Participants enjoyed a breakfast on the Second Tier at the Cadence Restaurant. Anne Ewers, President of the Kimmel Center welcomed the attendees. Wilfred Muskens Deputy Secretary for International Business Development, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development described the international association as a win-win partnership. Daniel Gouffe, President of ERAI and the President of the City of Lyon Chamber of Commerce promoted the similarities between Philadelphia and Lyon. Philippe Bonne, R&D Director of Arkema, a French chemical company in Lyon with facilities in King of Prussia, PA identified a key breakthrough in their nanomaterials technology and the development of next generation green polymers. Michael Scullin Hon. Consul of France in Philadelphia and Wilmington at Consular Agency of France and Counsel to Firm at McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney and Carpenter LLP described the Philadelphia - Lyon Bar Exchange Program that shares young lawyers between the two cities for six month periods. Directors from three Rhone-Alpes Centres of Excellence also shared their experiences with the international partnership. Yves Monneret, Vice President of the European Defense and Security Cluster (EDEN); Fabien Soler, Director of the Software & Image Center of Excellence (EDIT); and Pierre Neveux, Director of Green Energy Global Solution (MAIA) each explained the scope of their cluster and its economic impact to the region.
Enterprise Rhone-Alpes International (ERAI) a group from the Rhone-Alpes region of France has just inaugurated their second office in the US located in the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event was attended by Governor Rendell, and focused on the partnership between Pennsylvania and Rhone-Alpes, including a Conference on the Green Industry in France, an exhibition on Pollutec 2010, presentations by Governor Rendell, members of French Parliament and three companies involved with the ERAI effort in Philadelphia.

Governor of Pennsylvania Edward Rendell said that the Green Economy is going to keep the best and brightest in Pennsylvania. Stephen Tang President and CEO of the University City Science Center said that although the Science Center is the oldest urban research park in America it is still leading with innovation. University City Science Center is the oldest urban research park in the United States and recently completed its newest building at 3711 Market St. in Philadelphia, home to Quorum clubhouse, Port Technology Incubator and the Global Soft Landing Program. The University City Science Center is located within the University City Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) and houses three plug and play technology incubators and 2 million square feet of office and lab space.
I recently spoke with Aurelie Gaudin from the San Jose BioCenter, we talked briefly about the BioCenter's program of events to aid Residents and Affiliates in developing business strategies and gaining access to industry connections and contacts.
While many of the workshops and roundtables are specialized to the client's requirements, they are currently involved in a collaboration with BioCenter Premier Sponsor Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, where attendees may seek professional perspectives on relevant topics; and the "Meet with..." series where participants are able to meet with session speakers one on one.
An upcoming workshop at Orrick's facility in Menlo Park on September 10, has the topic of Patent Term Extensions and New Patent Office Rules; on September 22, Orrick will be hosting an industry panel discussion on the topic of Financial Darwinism: Which Companies are the Fittest.
The "Meet with..." sessions are exclusive events that must be registered for in advance. On September 24, at the BioCenter, attendees will meet with Licensing Directors from Merck and Co. Inc., the registration deadline for the event is today, September 4. Upcoming "Meet with..." events include meeting with Senior Managers from Genentech Inc., on October 22, and representatives from Nycomed in November, and Johnson & Johnson, Inc., in December.
The San Jose BioCenter is a non-profit business incubator in partnership with the City of San Jose, San Jose State University Research Foundation, and Prescience International. The San Jose BioCenter has won international acclaim and recognition for its incubation program.
The Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) is a bioprocessing facility located in the University of Minnesota BioTechnology Institute (BTI). According to the BRC website www.bti.umn.edu/brc, the Center maintains protein expression and fermentation equipment and services available to University affiliates and regional Industry.
In addition to the walk-in services that BRC provides, there is also a training program where students learn the skills needed for a competitive workforce. BRC is a member of Biodale (www.cbs.umn.edu/biodale), the University of Minnesota consortium of state-of-the-art equipment facilities that includes: the Biotechnology Resource Center, the Imaging Center, the Center for Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics, the BioMedical Genomics Center, the High Throughput Screening and Analysis Facility and the Computational Biology Centers.
