PHILADELPHIA--(May 12, 2010) – Technologies to advance heart disease treatment and gene therapy received awards from the University City Science Center’s QED Proof-of-Concept Program in May. Three researchers from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Medicine and Rutgers University will each receive $100,000 from the Science Center, a $100,000 match from their supporting institution, and business advice for one year.

This is the second round of awards by the QED Program, the first multi-institutional proof-of-concept program for life science technologies in the U.S. Awards are made to bridge the “valley of death” -- the gap between research grants and commercial seed investment, by awarding grants to life science technologies with high potential in the healthcare industry.

DreamIt Ventures Kicks Off 2010 Program on May 7

PHILADELPHIA (May 6, 2010) – Philadelphia’s entrepreneurial culture will receive an infusion when DreamIt Ventures moves 15 emerging companies into the University City Science Center for the summer. More than 45 young entrepreneurs will spend three months working with a support team of mentors, accountants and lawyers as they work to bring their ideas to the marketplace.

DreamIt was founded in 2007 by three entrepreneurs who knew from first-hand experience that new start-ups need more than funding. So they designed a business accelerator that in addition to seed funding offers its teams a collaborative work space in the Science Center’s Quorum space; mentors and advisors; legal, accounting and administrative help; and introductions to funding sources including angel investors, venture capitalists, private investors and public sources of funding.

Science Center Brings Together Innovation and Culture

Bread Board's NextFab Studio opened January 22, allowing students, adults, researchers and companies to fabricate and prototype novel designs in 3D.  NextFab and Bread Board's Esther Klein Gallery which had an opening for the Brower Jet Propulsion Laboratory in conjunction with the open house, brought the public into the Science Center to share in the excitement and possibility that is always present.

The 3,600 square foot production space much like the gallery across the street meets a number of needs.  It provides access to the materials that will generate both conceptual and physical innovation, so that the life cycle of information and commerce may perpetuate.
