PHILADELPHIA--(September 2, 2009) – The University City Science Center is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and the environment by joining the Greater Philadelphia Green Business Program. The Science Center has joined companies across the Philadelphia metropolitan area in making a public promise to change its daily business practices to reduce impacts on the environment.

“Joining the Greater Philadelphia Green Business program is the latest example of the Science Center’s commitment to environmental responsibility,” says Science Center President and CEO Stephen S. Tang, Ph.D.  “From our newest building at 3711 Market Street in West Philadelphia, which has one of the largest green roofs in the city, to designating a green office advocate, we believe that environmental principles can – and should – go hand in hand with standard business practices.”

Like other members of the Greater Philadelphia Green Business Program, the Science Center committed to reduce impacts on the environment by adopting green operational practices that include:
·         Raising awareness of sustainability efforts and environmental issues within the company and business community at large.
·         Reducing energy use at the facility.
·         Engaging in purchasing practices that minimize environmental impacts within business and throughout the supply chain
·         Reducing the carbon footprint of employee travel by encouraging alternative commuting and fuel economy
·         Reducing the volume of waste generated by business, recycling as much waste as possible.
·         Reducing the business’s aggregate water use and discharge of pollutants into storm water runoff.

The Science Center is currently one of only two Platinum Members of the Greater Philadelphia Green Business program.

Philadelphia Retains More Than 40 Life Sciences and Alternative Energy Jobs As Two Science Center Companies Remain in City

PHILADELPHIA --(August 13, 2009) –  More than 40 high-paying life sciences jobs will remain in West Philadelphia as two life sciences companies move into the University City Science Center’s newest building at 3711 Market Street on the Avenue of Technology in Philadelphia, PA.

Leading the way is Avid Radiopharmaceuticals, Inc., with 37 jobs. Just four years after it spun out of the University of Pennsylvania, Avid has outgrown the 5,000 square feet of space it occupied in the University City Science Center’s Port Business Incubator for startup companies at 3624 Market Street. Today, Avid announced that it moved into 16,000 square feet of custom-fitted office and lab space on the seventh floor of the Science Center’s new 155,000-square foot building at 3711 Market Street.

University City Science Center

The University City Science Center is located in University City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The Science Center was founded in 1963 with the formation of the research park in the heart of the nation’s fledgling “Eds and Meds” economy.  Since then, the Science Center has grown to an enormous size, housing now three Port incubators and 2 million sf of lab and office space.  I spoke with Jeanne Mell VP of Marketing Communications at the Science Center and we talked about the latest additions to the Science Center, including their newest building, 3711 Market St, the newest Port incubator, Quorum clubhouse and the QED Program for proof of concept funding.
