MEDFORD, MA (Oct. 22) -
Biocell Center,  a European biotechnology company that is the only firm to harvest and preserve amniotic stem cells, announced today that it is expanding its tissue bank and research operations to serve families, medical centers and scientists in the United States.

Prestigious prize honors Mass. General scientist for role in discovery of telomerase, enzyme that protects chromosome tips
 
BOSTON – Jack W. Szostak, PhD, of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Department of Molecular Biology and Harvard Medical School has been named a recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for work predicting and then discovering telomerase, an enzyme that builds and maintains the protective caps at the tips of chromosomes.  He shares this year’s prestigious scientific award with Elizabeth H. Blackburn, PhD, of the University of California at San Francisco and Carol W. Greider, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  In 2006 the three researchers shared the Lasker Award for Basic Science for the same work.

Woburn, Massachusetts, (September 22, 2009) – Pluromed, Inc. announced approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for BackStopTM, a device used in ureteroscopic kidney stone management procedures. BackStop was approved as a Class II device under the pre-market notification 510(k) process.

Wadsworth Medical Technologies Announces FDA Approval of DermaLOC

Westborough, MA – Wadsworth Medical Technologies today announced approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for DermaLOC, a non-invasive, needleless wound closure system.   DermaLOC is officially classified by the FDA as a Class I Device that presents minimal risk to the user.  This classification will allow Wadsworth Medical Technologies to market DermaLOC for human use.

Avaxia Biologics Awarded Phase I SBIR Grant to Develop Antibody Therapeutic for Oral Mucositis

Collaboration with Biomodels facilitates development of novel drug product 

BURLINGTON, MA (Sept. 16) Avaxia Biologics, Inc., a biotechnology company developing oral antibodies for disease targets accessible via the GI tract, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase I SBIR grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to support the development of a novel antibody therapeutic for oral mucositis.

UMass Boston Venture Development Center (VDC)

The University of Massachusetts Boston Venture Development Center (VDC) just opened this past May in Dorchester.  The 18,000 square foot facility provides companies access to offices and wet and dry labs as well as assistance in business development to shorten time from innovation to market.  

VDC is accepting companies involved in active collaboration with University faculty that are willing to accept student internships.  The facility has meeting spaces for the sharing of ideas and concepts.  The incubator has four such meeting spaces that are able to accommodate from four to fifty individuals, as well as a large reception area.

Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI)

Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI) was formed in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1985 as a private non-profit to accompany the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park.  MBI now manages three bioscience incubators in Worcester.

The Barber Avenue location provides space accommodations of all sizes to life science companies.  The incubator currently has a number of client tenants.
 
MBI Incubator at Biotech Three
Located in the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park this incubator provides space to life science companies close to the University of Massachusetts Medical School as well as the Massachusetts Stem Cell Bank and International Stem Cell Registry which were recently established with the support of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.

MBI Incubator at Gateway Park 
The Gateway Park incubator is associated with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).  The incubator is ideally positioned to spur the commercialization of WPI technology and allow incubated companies to expand into Gateway Park.
