Newly funded companies create medical innovations, help businesses improve productivity
PHILADELPHIA, PA (www.sep.benfranklin.org) – Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP) recently approved investments totaling $1,800,000 for nine early-stage Pennsylvania companies with promising technology innovations. Included in this is a $500,000 investment in Molecular Detection Inc. (MDI). MDI developed a quick method to detect drug resistant Staph infections. Investment details follow.

Council will advise the president on ways to foster entrepreneurship and transform laboratory ideas into new businesses and jobs
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke today announced the members of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a group that will support President Obama's innovation strategy by helping to develop policies that foster entrepreneurship and identifying new ways to take great ideas from the lab to the marketplace to drive economic growth and create jobs. Locke made the announcement at a U.S. Department of Commerce University Innovation Forum at the University of Michigan, where participants discussed the role of universities in innovation, economic development, job creation and commercialization of federally funded research.
The National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship will help build on this aggressive agenda. Members of the council include serial entrepreneurs, university presidents, investors and non-profit leaders. Steve Case, Mary Sue Coleman, and Desh Deshpande will serve as Co-Chairs. Steven W. Graves' professional career is focused on the development of Biomedical Diagnostics for critical world health applications. He graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder with a Degree in Biochemistry (1991) and the Pennsylvania State University with a Ph. D. in Biochemistry, Microbiology, & Molecular Biology (1998). The title of his thesis work was, "The Cloning, Purification, and Initial Kinetic Characterization of the Large Subunit of the Human Mitochondrial DNA Polymerase." After graduation he spent a year developing research grade instrumentation (chemical quench flows and stopped flow spectrophotometers) for Kin-Tek Instruments. He then moved to National Flow Cytometry Resource (NFCR) at Los Alamos (1999) as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate where he specialized in the development of novel flow cytometry instrumentation and application of flow cytometry to biochemical problems of interest.

PHILADELPHIA--(June 24, 2010) – Scientists and researchers from 17 universities and research institutions in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware have been invited to submit proposals for the third round of the University City Science Center’s QED Proof-of-Concept Funding Program.
The RFP was released on June 24 to: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Delaware State University, Drexel University, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, Lehigh University, Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Temple University, Thomas Jefferson University, University of Delaware, University of Pennsylvania, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Widener University, The Wistar Institute.

Grants Will Help Bring New Green Technologies to Market, Creating Jobs, Launching Businesses
Philadelphia, June 11, 2010- The City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, in partnership with the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern PA are launching an innovative new pilot program designed to help Philadelphia companies with cutting edge energy efficiency technologies develop a market for their products. The Greenworks Pilot Energy Technology (G-PET) Program offers grants to Philadelphia companies to accelerate the introduction of their new, energy efficient products and services to the marketplace. G-PET is being funded with $430,000 of federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to the City of Philadelphia.
