Newly funded companies will create jobs, offer medical advancements, and more
PHILADELPHIA, PA (www.sep.benfranklin.org) – Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP) recently approved investments totaling $800,000 for five early-stage Pennsylvania companies with promising technology innovations.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.sep.benfranklin.org) – RoseAnn B. Rosenthal, President & CEO of Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP), yesterday testified before the U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology’s subcommittee on Technology and Innovation.
Rosenthal was asked to testify because of her track record in Pennsylvania’s technology community, expertise in the industry, and role within Ben Franklin. Since 2001 alone, Ben Franklin has committed more than $50 million to over 500 early stage companies, which have created or retained over 7000 high-tech jobs. During that time Ben Franklin’s portfolio companies have raised more than a billion dollars in follow-on investment.

PHILADELPHIA--(January 20, 2010) – Saul Behar has joined the University City Science Center as Vice President and General Counsel. Behar has worked for the Science Center as a consultant since January 2009. He reports directly to Stephen S. Tang, Ph.D., the Science Center’s President and CEO. In addition to his role as General Counsel, Behar also has responsibility for government relations at the federal, state and city levels.
Behar brings to his new position nearly 25 years of experience as an attorney, senior executive and strategic advisor, managing sophisticated corporate, real estate and securities transactions for both early-stage and established companies in diverse fields. Most recently, Behar was a partner at Wolf Block LLP in Philadelphia. Prior to that, he served as General Counsel at Provident Senior Living Trust, a privately owned real estate investment trust based in Princeton, New Jersey that owned 68 senior housing facilities in 19 states. Before joining Provident, Behar served as General Counsel at Keystone Property Trust, an NYSE-listed real estate investment trust headquartered in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania that focused on industrial real estate. Provident and Keystone were highly successful real estate firms that were acquired by the leading companies in their industry sectors.
Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania held their Starving Entrepreneur Annual Open House this past Wednesday. In attendance were portfolio companies, network partners and executives at Ben Franklin’s Navy Yard headquarters in the Building 100 Innovation Center.

PHILADELPHIA--(December 1, 2009) – Market Street in University City is getting a facelift. Work began in November on a project to revitalize the streetscape on Market from 34th to 41st Streets. The University City Science Center is overseeing the project which is expected to take seven months to complete. The project was initially conceived by the University City District as a way to improve the 40th and Market area. The University City District then worked with the University City Science Center to expand the project to its current scope. The project is funded by property owners and landlords along the targeted area of Market Street and a $2 million grant from the City of Philadelphia’s ReStore Philadelphia Corridors program.

Philadelphia, PA. November 1, 2009 /BUSINESS WIRE/--Integral Molecular, Inc. has been selected to receive a five year, $9.1 million contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, to elucidate novel B cell epitopes on the surface of viral pathogens.

PHILADELPHIA--(October 21, 2009) – A new regional Proof-of-Concept program is pumping $600,000 into technology commercialization in the Greater Philadelphia region.
The Nanotechnology Institute (NTI) held the From Discovery to Commercialization Conference for nanotechnology at the Chemical Heritage Institute in Philadelphia on October 15 and 16. The event illuminated recent successes in the local community and initiatives that are accelerating the process of transferring discoveries from the labs of local researchers to the shelves of global consumers. The advances are happening in the fields of materials, energy, and biomedicine, and when managed correctly it is possible to choose the appropriate direction for sustainable technology to commercialization and innovation.
